Glinton Horticultural Society – 2009 Show report and winners

by Tony Henthorn on September 21, 2009

A glorious day once again brought out the crowds as Glinton Horticultural Society held their 66th Annual Show on Saturday 19th September at the Arthur Mellows Village College, one of the biggest and best supported shows of its kind in the region.

There were entries, not only for flowers, fresh vegetables, wine making, baking, handicrafts and photography, but for the heaviest pumpkin and longest runner bean, as well as the large children’s section. Concerns that the postal strike and alterations at the college necessitating changes in the staging of the Show could affect entries proved unfounded, with the number of entries well exceeding 1000, up by over one hundred on 2008.

Exhibitors came from places as far afield as Old Leake, near Louth, and Boston, as well as the local area, and they competed for a variety of twenty-six cups and shields, and special medals in the Dahlia and Chrysanthemum classes.

“A lot of our exhibitors are regulars”, said Show Secretary Beryl Rawlings, “and it was nice to be told that they prefer to come to Glinton if there are other shows on the same day, both for the strong competition and also for the friendly atmosphere. We also, once again, attracted some new exhibitors, which is good for the future.

It was also nice to see that we had probably the biggest influx of visitors for many years, with well over 200 paying at the door. Although we were concerned on how the postal strike, and the alterations to the college, (meaning we couldn’t use the normal facilities,) would affect things, everything turned out fine, and we had many kind compliments from both exhibitors, and the public alike.”
