History lesson

I was very interested in issue 61 of the Tribune to read about the teachers - as one of them was my Aunt. Their names, front row left to right were; Mrs Rawbon, Mr Rawbon (Headmaster) and my aunt Miss Guymer. On the back row are Miss Clark and Miss Howell.Miss Howell lived at Jessamine house next to the butchers. She was, foe many years, the infants teacher. Miss Guymer taught Standard 1 & 2, Miss Rawbon Standard 3 and Mr Rawbon taught the top class. They all taught at the school for many years.

Mrs Rawbon and Miss Guymer were very active in village life through the WI and the church, also raising money for the Red Cross during the war. Miss Guymer also took the May Day procession round the village, we stopped at the ‘big houses’ for squash and biscuits.

Mr & Mrs Rawbon lived at the School House and Miss Guymer near the church. Miss Guymer was known for being very strict, as letters written to the school by former pupils showed when the school celebrated 150 years - but she was very well respected.

There were also two other teachers, Miss Larkman, who came from London with Miss Clark and was a head mistress. I understand that Miss Larkman ‘had rooms’ in Welmore Road with a Mr & Mrs Knightley. Miss Parsons taight at the school for a while and had rooms in the Red House with Mr & Mrs Hadman in Rectory Lane.

Yours sincerely
Sybil G Hopkins
Welmore Road, Glinton
