As it has been six months since the closure of the Helpston Store and Post Office, it seems an appropriate time to up-date Tribune readers as to what has occurred and the current ‘state of play’ regarding the premises.
In spite of several rumours regarding potential purchasers, the Tribune understands that there have been no ‘realistic’ offers for the shop. However, we are able to confirm that currently there is an individual, who already owns another shop, seriously investigating the feasibility of purchasing the premises. It could be a be a further three to four weeks before they are able to confirm whether they are in a position to proceed – let’s hope it’s good news.
However, if the interested party decide not to proceed – it appears that all may not be lost – a working party has been formed which is considering a village buy-out. Obviously, this is no mean feat and one which could not be undertaken lightly, but it may be the only option left open if Helpston and the surrounding communities are going to benefit from a local shop. For this to be successful significant investment, donations and support will be needed from the community, but as there are already more than 180 community-run village stores throughout the country the proposition should be possible.
The ideal solution would be for the shop to be privately purchased, and to that end, all possible support will be given to this current interested party but if they decide against purchasing, then a buy-out will be the next step.
The working party will keep Tribune readers informed of any developments, so make sure you read either the Helpston Village Hall notice board or log onto www.villagetribune.org.uk for further up-dates.
