Improvement work is due to start soon on Northborough village hall after the final legalities were approved on 12th March.
Around £200,000 will be spent by the city council after the cash was protected during the creation of the council’s latest annual budget and continued drive for efficiency measures by finance chiefs in the wake of the current recession. Northborough’s councillor Peter Hiller commented: “It was vitally important to ring-fence this promised funding during this year’s hard-headed city council budget negotiations and a strong case was argued with the leader and responsible cabinet members. Village halls are the life blood of our rural communities and wards like ours are often overlooked in favour of our city-centre cousins when capital grants are allocated for improvement programs. Fortunately we won the day I was able to sign-off the legal side to enable the refurbishment work to proceed as planned.”
The improvements are being coordinated by village resident and Northborough Community Association member John Bell and will make the building far more energy-efficient as well as vastly improving the facilities for hall users.

Having read the article regarding the refurbishment of the Village Hall it appears that what is recorded is not entirely correct. The amount of money made available by Peterborough City Council is £150,000. I, along with other Committee Members, have been pursuing the finalising of this project for some considerable time. Others involved have been the Parish Council and their Clerk, various departments of Peterborough City Council and our Ward Councillor Peter Hiller
The final legal document which is a Licence to Carry out Works was officially signed and sealed by the City Council on 30th March 2009
Work has now commenced and is scheduled to last some 15 weeks
We are hoping to be “Open” for bookings from August 1st 2009
It is also hoped to officially reopen the Hall on Saturday 8th August 2009 between 14.00 and 16.00 but will keep you informed of these two items
