THE first main line steam locomotive to be built in Britain for nearly 50 years came through Helpston on Saturday 7th February. Tornado, which has been constructed at a cost of £3m, pulled her first train last month and departed her Darlington home to haul her first train to London. The train, known as The Talisman, consisted of 13 carriages travelling at speeds of up to 75mph. Top left, Helpston residents eagerly await the arrival of the loco, above, Tornado shortly after passing over Maxey crossing. Photo Marian Connor.
