Restaurant review – Handmade Burger Co at the Old Still

The Old Still in the City’s Westgate Arcade had sat moribund for quite a while until recently. A traditional spit-and-sawdust alehouse for many years, it had changed hands frequently but always held a reputation for a good drink at a reasonable price.

Latterly the place suffered, falling from ‘character’ to tatty and finally closing its doors a couple of years ago after a brief stint as a somewhat incongruous temporary art gallery. In April it rose however, in a flame-grilled phoenix-like metamorphosis, back into the busy Peterborough city-centre eateries’ market, as the Handmade Burger Co’s latest of their 23 restaurants across the UK.

Refurbished and improved with more than a passing nod of respect to the old building and pub atmosphere, many original features within its Tardis-like interior have been given a clever shabby-chic makeover to enhance the customer experience. The experience is good. Seemingly plentiful and attentive staff work the punters well; you’re seated swiftly and order taken quickly but without undue pressure. A choice of 40-odd varieties range from the traditional ‘classic’ burger at £6.45 to an £11.95 ‘Macho’ consisting of a beef patty, a chicken breast, mature cheddar, smoked bacon, mayo, lettuce etc. and all sorts in between.

Being made to order you can ask for pretty much any combination of what’s on offer and even specify how you’d like it cooked.

Here’s the rub: they’re ok burgers and certainly well presented but nothing special and, disappointingly, don’t really live up to the hyperbole on the promotional literature. Like lots of ‘homemade’ type burgers my beef patty was thick but rather on the small side for the bun, which itself was a rather undistinguished article, being prone to breaking up and rather dry. This was a basic and rather bland beef burger, the standard a reasonable cook could put together very easily at home and frankly probably do a better job, with a bespoke selection of tasty stuff between it and the bun.

Everything else is an extra cost, including the normally included chips or a side salad, a tad disappointing at these prices.

Yes, I enjoyed my visit and I’d probably go back. It’s conveniently situated, the staff are good at what they do and interior is pleasing - but for me, in the burgeoning business of burger joints, the Burger King double whopper still deserves its crown; it’s something less than a king’s ransom to enjoy and it’s good, it’s very, very good.
