Ladle of Love: Peterborough Soup Kitchen Feeds the City’s Most Vulnerable

Local charity serves over 18,000 meals a year with the help of 200 dedicated volunteers—could you be one of them?

Peterborough Soup Kitchen has been serving the city’s homeless and disadvantaged for over 40 years. Run entirely by volunteers, the charity operates every single day of the year, offering hot soup, sandwiches, drinks, and a warm welcome to anyone in need.

From humble beginnings in 1983 at the Salvation Army Citadel (before Queensgate Shopping Centre even existed), the charity has grown with the city, moving from Westgate Church to St. Theresa’s Homeless Centre, and now operating out of the Millfield Community Centre. Food is distributed daily from a specially adapted van based at Acland Street car park, where 35 to 60 people are fed each day—rain or shine.

In 2023 alone, more than 18,000 individuals were served thanks to the tireless efforts of around 200 local volunteers who together give over 7,600 hours annually. There are no paid staff—just compassion, commitment, and community spirit.

Could You Help?

The charity is always looking for new volunteers. Whether it’s preparing food, serving from the van, helping with collections, or fundraising, every role is vital. Corporate sponsorship packages are also available, which include brand exposure via social media and newsletters, plus the chance for staff to take part in evening kitchen visits and food service.
